Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks can be installed on storefronts with narrow stiles made of aluminum sliding doors to increase security and strength of the lock. These locks have keys on both sides to allow for greater flexibility.
To accurately measure a new lock to your door, you must first determine the depth of the case (or backset). This is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the latch hole.
Tubular Latch
The tubular latch is the most well-known type of door latch. It's easy and simple to install, which makes it a favourite of Joiners and DIY enthusiasts alike. It is available in various sizes, shapes, and quality levels that will fit any style door handle.
A tubular latch is a rectangular steel casing fitted with a latch bolt and a latch follower with springs (also called a striker). When you open the door, the latch retracts, allowing you to shut and lock it. When you shut the door, the latch bolt then springs back to meet the edge of the frame and hold the door shut.
You'll need to decide on the height of the latch on the door before you install it. A lot of people think that a metre from the floor is the ideal level to place a latch and door handle. This isn't always the situation. When door knobs are involved, the latch should be located on the mid-rail, which is where the bulk of the weight is shifted when you open and close the door.
The position of the hole in the door and strike plate with a pencil once you've decided the location of the latch. Then, drill pilot holes to the screws that are used to attach the plate to the door. After drilling the pilot holes, use a countersink to make sure that the plate's back will be flush with the door once it's screwed in place.
If you are looking for a more robust option than the standard tubular latch, you should consider choosing a double sprung variant. It has an additional spring for the tongue movement, resulting in a smoother closing when you close and open the door. It also features a strong-action, spring-loaded spindle follower that ensures that levers and doorknobs are returned to their horizontal position after each use.
Once you have put the latch on the door, you'll need to install a strike plate in the frame. The strike plate is the piece that sits in the space left by the latch after it's closed. To accomplish this, mark the location you would like the strike plate to be placed on the frame section that surrounds it. Then, use your knife to make an oval space for the plate, and then remove it.
Cylindrical Latch
Cylindrical locks are often employed on doors for interior use. They are commonly found in offices and homes and are able to be used in a wide range of applications. They are similar to mortise locks, however, they are much easier and faster to install. They do not require a pocket or "mortise," to be cut into the door frame like mortise lock systems do. They are simply put in a hole or bore that is cut into the door face. They are available in various sizes and can be used with both knobs and levers to open and close the door.
The primary difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that the latter locks can only be opened using keys of a particular type. The pins are fixed by springs and pins of different sizes. When the correct key is inserted and the pins align, allowing the cylinder to rotate. This allows the latch bolts to retract and allow the door to be opened.
When the wrong key is inserted in the wrong way, the pins don't align properly, and they prevent the piston from moving. It's important that you use the correct key to gain access to your home or office.
The cylinder itself sits within the door's body, and is connected to the operating trim via a square or half-round extension. The cylinder also has small notches on its sides that are designed to align with the key notches when the right key is placed. Once the cylinder is moved, the latch bolt will follow.
A strike plate is a metal plate that holds the bolt that is projected to lock. The strike plate is usually constructed from heavy-gauge steel and attached to the door frame with screws. It also has an opening for the latch bolt to engage into.
When replacing a cylindrical lock make sure to make use of the appropriate tools to remove the old lock's handle or knob and latch bolt. Mark the place of the new latch bolt and strike on the door and frame after taking off the old hardware. It's a good idea test your lock's operation by pressing the strike plate or latch bolt by using your finger. If the strike plate or latch bolt is damaged or doesn't operate correctly, you should consider replacing them.
Key-Locked Lock
This type of lock is controlled with a key on the outside and a lever or knob on the inside. This type of lock is designed to secure doors that aren't at risk of being tampered with, for instance in offices. This type of lock permits the outside lever to either be locked or unlocked, while the inside knob/lever is open for immediate exit. The key is only needed to retract the latchbolt when the door is closed.
The pins of a keylock are aligned and pointed at a point called the shearline. The pins are aligned with the shearline when the key that is needed is inserted into the lock. The plug can then be turned to open the latchbolt. If van hook lock 've had a lock perfectly aligned but the key could not be opened it is possible that one of the pins might be not aligned with the shearline.
Some locks also feature a face plate, which is mounted on the door's edge and can be decorative and provide security and strength to the locking mechanism. It's common to see these plates on mortice locks as well rim locks with reversed spring bolts.
A strike plate is also available. It is usually connected to the door frame as well as the jamb, and is fitted with an opening through which the bolt is guided from the cylinder and into the lock. This is often used alongside deadbolts for additional security.
The cylinder is the last part, and it holds a series pins that align the key's tip to prevent it from turning. A cylinder of good quality is very difficult to break into without the proper tools and knowledge of how to find it. To lock a front door, you need to turn the key in the same direction the door opens. If the door opens with the right hand, as in the case of the key needs to be turned clockwise in order to lock the door. To unlock the door, turn the key counterclockwise. This differs from other locks, like Chubb locks which require you to turn your key in the opposite way of the way the door opens.
Keyless Latch
With a keyless lock, you can lock and unlock your doors without a traditional key. Keyless locks are operated using a smartphone app or an access code and some models come with a hidden camera for added security. Be aware of your security requirements and compatibility with your existing hardware and doors when choosing keys-free locks. Read the instructions of the manufacturer and specifications before installing. Some keyless locks may require special door modifications or preparations.
A number of companies are working on smart lock technology that replaces traditional keyed locks with additional security features. These devices can be unlocked by the use of a code, fingerprint or facial recognition, and are typically more durable than traditional locks. Some smart locks have tamper proof features and can detect if a door is opened with a key that is not authorized or force.
One company, called Latch has created an attractive high-tech lock that operates similarly to other smart locks. Its main market is realty companies which manage apartment blocks. Renters can unlock the lock using a passcode, key or a mobile device. They can also let in cleaners, dog walkers or guests from outside of town using temporary codes. The company claims that this will stop tenants losing their keys and reduce the cost of maintenance since there is no need to replace locks if a renter moves out.
The Latch lock isn't accessible to the public at this point however, it could be found in condos or large apartments. The company has already started testing the lock in a couple of places and plans to release more units in the coming year. The price is comparable to the cost of a regular lock. The company also offers low prices for software and affordable pricing.
You can alter the shortcuts at any time by using the Latch App. Start the app and then click the menu in the top left corner of the screen. Select 'Widgets', and then select the doors you want to appear as shortcuts. You can see the access history of your doors through the Latch App after you've configured them.
